Even Barriers Make Us Stronger

Readers’ Responses:

Folks,

Your example of the barriers making us stronger is good. Also it is worth remembering that some barriers can also weaken us. A goodly amount of wisdom in terms of leadership is required to help us identify which barrier is which of the “Serenity Prayer.”

I am obviously pro self-advocacy but I do have an observation. Whenever I read articles about challenges to self-advocacy or what we can do to strengthen self-advocacy the one piece that I see missing is the self-advocates responsibilities once they have been able to make decisions about their lives. For example: if you decide you want to volunteer for an organization and that is set up, then you (self-advocate) must be ready to be at the organization as you have agreed to. I also think this is a message we need to stress whenever we are encouraging our folks to obtain what they wish.
