Broken Record? Add Power.

Ever hear this broken record?

“We want real lives in the community. We want good jobs and real pay for our work. We want to choose the people who support us. We want to decide how we live.”

The record keeps turning, but little seems to change—because something is missing: power.

To make real change, we need real power. The good news is that we can become powerful.

Group Exercise

Role play is a good way to learn about using power. Try acting out a skit in which a group of self-advocates are asking that the meal time be changed at their home. Self-advocates want the meal at 6:30 p.m., but the “powers” (staff, parent, cook, whoever) say that dinner is at 5:00 p.m. and it’s not going to change.

Rerun the skit several times, with the self-advocates using different tactics. Discuss the power dynamics and interactions involved.
