State of Washington Is Violating Human Rights

What? Washington State is taking students with disabilities out of public schools? Yup. Is the state really putting them in classes held in institutions? Yup. But wasn’t Washington the first state (1972) to require public schools to educate special-needs students just like any other students? Yup. Isn’t this a giant step back to the ’50s? Yup. Isn’t this illegal? Yup.

Can’t self-advocates do something about it?

Yup! Write letters to the state’s governor (see below).

Group Activity: Please Write Letters

People First of Washington is asking for your help. Get your group together and read aloud this e-mail and People First’s letter-writing guidelines below. Then support each other to write and send letters. The letters don’t have to be long.

Remember: School inclusion isn’t just a nice thing to do. It’s a human right! Sending a letter is an important way we can all support each other to change our society. Thanks!

Letter-Writing Guidelines (from People First of Washington)

SELF-ADVOCATE LETTER CAMPAIGN
WE WANT INCLUSION FOR YOUTH!

Problem:
More and more youth in Washington state are being placed in institutions, like Fircrest and Frances Haddon Morgan. Some of these institutions are now opening up schools so students won’t be able to go to school in the community anymore.

What you can do:
You can write a letter to the governor of Washington and to the person in charge of all the schools in Washington (see addresses below). You can say what you think about this issue. You can talk about why you think it is important for students to live and go to schools in the community.

Who is part of this campaign?
Many self-advocacy organizations from Washington state, including Self Advocates in Leadership Coalition (SAIL), the Self Advocacy in Motion Project (SAM), People First of Washington, Self Advocates of Washington (SAW), the LEAD Coalition, and Disability Rights Washington. Who else is involved? Our most important ally of all: YOU!

What could I say in my letter?
The letter should be your own words, but here are some things you can talk about:

  • Why you believe in inclusion.
  • Your stories of going to school and being included.
  • Why you think students should live, work and learn in the community.
  • Your experience living in an institution.
  • Your experience with family members in institutions.
  • Special education law says that students should be included as much as possible.
  • Why you think all people deserve to grow up in a home, and not an institution.

Where do I send the letter?
Two places:

Governor Chris Gregoire
Office of the Governor
PO Box 40002
Olympia, WA 98504-0002

Terry Bergeson, Superintendent
Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction
PO Box 47200
Olympia, WA 98504-7200

Today’s Trivia Question:

Namibia has just recently ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, making it the 11th country to do so. How many more countries must ratify?

(The answer will be published in the next Memo.)

Answer to November 28th Trivia Question:
Taiwan and Vatican City. In 1971, the People’s Republic of China (mainland China) replaced Taiwan (also known as the Republic of China) in the United Nations. The independent papal state of the Vatican, with 771 people (including the Pope), was created in 1929. They have not chosen to become part of the international organization.

Question was: What are the only two countries of the world that are NOT members of the United Nations?

Do you have a trivia item you’d like to submit?

Create a trivia question and we will review your question for possible use.

Your trivia question:
The correct answer:

Would you like your name to appear as the author of the trivia question? If yes, give us your name and where you are from.
