No Choking Others at Meetings

Are your meetings disasters? Make rules. Write them down. One group uses these rules:

  • Trust each other.
  • Listen with an open mind.
  • Try not to stink.
  • Pay attention.
  • Leave personal issues at home.
  • No gossiping.
  • No goofing off.
  • Attend meetings.
  • Be on time.
  • Do not put others down.
  • Spread the work around.
  • Stay on topic.
  • Do not interrupt.

1.

Group Activity

Make a list of expected behaviors for members at your meetings. Go around the circle and take turns saying one thing each. Then read the list out loud. Is anything missing? Go around again.

Get agreement. Ask: “Is this a list we can all agree to abide by at meetings?” Get unanimous approval. Post the list and read it before every meeting (or as often as you need) to remind folks of your agreement.
