Let’s Use the News

What’s the latest news about disability? It helps to know it sometimes—like when you’re going to meet with your representative. Or when you’re writing a letter to the editor. Or when you’re making a presentation.

One place to look is a Web site from Patricia Bauer. She collects all the disability news in one place. Let’s put it to good use.

The Web Site

3. Resource

1.

The Web Site

http://www.PatriciaEBauer.com has articles on disability issues from media in the US and worldwide. Patricia writes: “As a journalist and the mother of a young adult with disabilities, I have often wondered why I was not able to find an online source for media coverage of issues relating to disability. Ultimately, I concluded that I needed to create such a resource myself.”

2.

Group Activity

Read the news together. Next time you’re all together, get someone with a computer to go to this Web site. Then search on a topic, such as “self-advocate.” You’ll see a list of articles. Click one, and you will see summary of that story.

Choose someone who’s comfortable reading. Have him or her read the summary out loud. Then all talk about what it means.

3.

Resource

Meeting Builders
This collection of short activities can be used as part of your regular group meetings. Step by step instructions make the activities easy to lead as you learn skills of self-advocacy and leadership.
