[SARN Memo for July 15, 2009]
What does it mean to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities? The country of Rwanda signed it. But they are now proposing to go against it. Their parliament is working on a bill to force people with intellectual disabilities to get sterilized. That would deny people one of their most basic human rights.
The world must say “no” to abuse. We all need to speak out against this action. Together, our voices have power.

Our voice is stronger when we all work together. Let’s all write a message to Rwanda, and send all our messages together.
Read this e-mail out loud. Let everyone say how he or she feels when hearing about this issue. Then come up with a two- or three-sentence statement to send to the Rwandan government.
E-mail your group’s statement to Connie Laurin-Bowie at Inclusion International (conniel@cacl.ca). She will collect all our statements and send them in a bunch to the right person in Rwanda. This will allow us to apply our voice and power in a united way.
