All Together Now

[SARN Memo for September 3, 2009]

A movement has great power. Think about it: Thanks to the labor movement, we have weekends. Workers in our country demanded better working conditions. They stuck together. They won.

Self-advocacy is also a movement. It’s a way we can all work together to make life better for everyone. For example, many of us are banding together to stop the R-word.

When we join forces, we win.

1. Group Demonstration: Working Together

Sometimes a simple demonstration can help make a point.

When your group gathers, talk about one goal you have for your group this year. It may be having a fundraiser. Maybe it’s to put on a dance, or to meet your legislator. Just choose one goal.

Then get a big balloon. Ask one member to write your goal on the balloon in dark marker. Have everyone gather in a circle. Find a time keeper. Then explain the demonstration: You will throw the balloon in the air. The group’s job is to work together to keep it aloft as long as possible. Do it several times.

Afterward, talk about how everyone can work together to meet your goal. What are some things each person can do? What are some things that are best done all together?
