International Workers Day

[SARN Memo for May 5, 2010]

May 1st is International Workers Day. Work is a human right. It is a right protected in the UN treaty on disability rights. Work is also a gift we have to give. Our labor makes the community a better place. Self-advocates have a lot of skills to make society hum.

Let’s work together to find a place where everyone can contribute. We all stand to gain.

1. Group Activity: Dream Job

Ask everyone to think about the question “What is your dream job?” Give everyone some blank paper and markers, and invite them to draw their dream job—with them in it. Then make time for each person to describe his or her dream job and show (if he or she wants) his or her drawing. Ask each person and the group as a whole to come up with one step the person can take that might get him or her closer to this type of work.
