YouTube Builds Self-Advocacy

[SARN Memo for June 10, 2010]

Self-advocacy is on YouTube—thanks to People First New Hampshire. Watch these four training videos featuring young adult self-advocates. Hear them talk honestly about bullying and about how to treat and respect everyone.

Let’s help the New Hampshire folks spread the power of these videos. They’ve invited us to “Share in classrooms. Let’s work together to change attitudes.”

1. Group Project: Use YouTube for Practice at Speaking Out

Our New Hampshire friends are onto something great. These videos not only get the message out, they also give self-advocates practice in speaking out about bullying or the R-word. Your group can do it, too.

Get a video camera. Spend a good amount of time talking together with your group about the issue. Then interview people on camera. Post these on YouTube.

  1. Tell people the plan: to record interviews and post them on YouTube.
  2. Talk about an issue like bullying or name calling. Get everyone’s ideas and feelings.
  3. Film the interviews. Record people one at a time.
  4. Make the YouTube video. Educate your allies about the project. Among them, you can find a young person who can help you make a YouTube video. Edit the video clips as needed.
  5. Show time! Get together to watch your videos.
