Understanding the Civil Rights View of Disability
Like everyone else, people with disabilities want to be seen as regular people, not labels. We want equal rights. The problem, unfortunately, is that since ancient times, self-advocates have been stereotyped, segregated, and denied basic human rights. In the last few decades, however, self-advocates have learned from the struggles of other minority groups and are working together to break down discrimination and other barriers. This new approach is what we call the civil rights view of disability.
In this kit groups will examine this civil rights view of disability: what it is, where it came from, and how they can use its power. We are a minority group, and we have rights. Let’s work together to achieve them. Part 3 of a three-part training series where participants learn to recognize and respond to the competing views of disability within society.
