Remembering With Dignity (RWD) began in 1995, as a project of ACT, a Minnesota non-Profit. Its mission was to identify the unmarked gravesites of the over 13,000 patients who resided in one of the 14 Minnesota State Hospitals between 1866 and 2026. These patients, upon death, were buried in unmarked graves, identified only by a number. The cemeteries left to silently hold the souls of these patients.

From 1995 through 2015, Remembering With Dignity, received funding from the State of Minnesota and private donors. This funding was used to identify, secure and place individual gravestones, or group monuments, with the names and birth/death dates of over 8,000 patients. Remembering With Dignity also worked with the State of Minnesota to draft a resolution, recognizing the injustice done, upon death, to the patients at the Minnesota State Hospitals. The resolution was signed by Governor Tim Pawlenty in 2010. In 2015, funding cuts ended the work of Remembering With Dignity leaving over 5,000 graves unmarked.

In the summer of 2026, ACT made a decision to resume the work of Remembering With Dignity and complete the project that was started 30 years ago. The work ahead will include identifying and compiling lists of the patients buried in the unmarked graves, purchase individual or group monument stones that identify these individuals, and place them at the gravesite or in the cemetery where they are buried.

Your donation will help ACT complete this important project.

To complete this important work and recognize the lives of these souls, we need your help. We anticipate the cost of each gravestone, upon placement, to be approximately $550. We are requesting funding from the State of Minnesota but also need individual support. All lives deserve to remembered and celebrated. Please help us to complete this work.
